Why don’t men go to the doctor?

"I do not know these diseases"

The exact name "erectile dysfunction" only accounts for 16.5% of total searches (8100 searches per week).

31% of searches are related to "solutions" that mainly concern self-medication.

While 19% of searches are related to "causes of impotence", many of them associated with age and diabetes.

On the other hand, 45% of searches are directly "premature ejaculation" (6860).

In general, there seems to be a greater lack of knowledge of PE, where it is surprising that the aim is to 'prevent or control' the pathology rather than the 'causes'.

"I can handle this myself."

Many men convince themselves that their sexual problems are temporary and will improve over time. *

This factor, together with the ignorance of what a urologist does, leads them to look for solutions on the Internet that allow them to answer their problems.

This focuses on short-term solutions that do not solve the root problem.

For example, in Spain, the highest percentage of searches for ED are 'treatments'.

While on PE the highest percentage are 'natural remedies and pills'.

"I’m not in the habit of going to the doctor"

Women are more used to seeing a doctor throughout their lives for different reasons.

For them the doctor is more cyclical and preventive, for them it is more "symptomatic".

It is women who persuade their partners to come for medical checkups.

According to the 2018 Cleveland Clinic survey, the men surveyed agreed with the phrase "I don’t need annual medical check-ups, I’m in good health".

Women care more about their partner's health than they do for themselves.

"I’m afraid of what the doctor might say"

Some men admit not to have mentioned something to the doctor that worries them about their health because:

  • were not prepared to face a difficult diagnosis
  • or because they didn’t want to be judged.

The man facing such situations looks vulnerable and does not like to feel this way.

20% of men say they are not completely honest with their doctor. The main reasons include:

  • did not want to hear that they needed to change their diet/lifestyle (36%).
  • they knew something was wrong, but they were not ready to face the diagnosis and/or would prefer not to know if they had any health problems (37%).

I feel ashamed, I’m not comfortable talking about these issues

Half of the men do not talk about their health with their partners/friends and sometimes when they comment on a health problem it is to boast of "war" injuries.

In particular, sexual diseases directly affect their self-esteem and many see it as a sign of weakness.
